Yesuk Tso

Yesuk Tso, Ph.D., is an American-Korean composer, pianist, and teacher of composition and music theory. He composes music in a variety of genres ranging from traditional ensembles to operas. He applies modern electronic music writing techniques in his compositions. Also, she actively collaborates with concert musicians in related specialties.

Educated at Boston University, Peabody Conservatory of Music, and the University of Maryland, Dr. Tso has been a nominee for multiple grants and awards, including recognition in the Prix d’Été competition and an award from the International Society of American Music Composer. She is also the co-founder and founder of the Kirov International Junior E-Piano competition and oversees the Kirov Gifted and Talented Music program.

Currently, serves as the director of the Apex Piano Department within Anne Arundel County Public School’s Arts Magnet program.

Dr. Tso provides training in the following programs:

1. music theory

This introductory course covers the basics of music theory, including the notation system, concepts of rhythm and meter, the study of intervals and chords, and the basics of melody and harmony. By combining lecture, practice, and listening exercises, students will develop their skills in analyzing and understanding the structure of music. The focus is on building a strong theoretical foundation to support later music study. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply music theory and concept to practice.

2. Musical composition

This course provides students with an introduction to the basic principles of music composition, emphasizing various styles, forms, and methods of music composition. A mix of lectures, listening exercises, and practice assignments will develop students’ understanding of melody, harmony, rhythm, and orchestral sound. The focus is on developing creativity and exploring different techniques in composition. By the end of the course, students will have written their own original pieces and will have gained an understanding of the creative process of making music.
